Fuzzy Logic (in Risk Screening)

Last Update: 9 Mar 2026

In the context of risk management and AML compliance, fuzzy logic is an advanced computational approach used in name matching and entity screening. Unlike strict "Boolean" logic (which requires an exact, 100% character-for-character match), fuzzy logic recognizes degrees of similarity, allowing the system to identify matches even when there are typos, missing words, or phonetic variations.

Overcoming the Limitations of Exact Matching

If a sanctioned individual is listed on the OFAC database as "Jonathon Doe," but they apply for a merchant account as "Jon Doe" or "Jonathan Doe," a legacy system requiring an exact match will miss the threat entirely. Conversely, poorly tuned systems will flag every single "Jon" in the database, creating thousands of false positives.

Precision Screening with Onlayer

Onlayer eliminates this inefficiency. By using advanced entity correlation and highly tuned fuzzy logic, Onlayer drives a >95% reduction in false positives. It accurately matches real threats despite data variations, cutting manual compliance review times by up to 60% with highly configurable, risk-based alert levels.
