Independent Software Vendor (ISV)

Last Update: 18 Mar 2026

An Independent Software Vendor (ISV) is a company that creates, develops, and sells specialized software solutions designed for specific industries (verticals). Examples include a clinic management software for dentists, a booking platform for yoga studios, or a restaurant management system.

The Shift to Integrated Payments

Historically, ISVs only sold software, leaving the merchant to figure out their own payment processing. Today, modern ISVs embed payment processing directly into their software—often by becoming a Payment Facilitator (PayFac) or partnering closely with an acquiring bank. This creates a seamless "all-in-one" solution for their users.

Scaling ISV Onboarding with Onlayer

When an ISV embeds payments, they suddenly take on the burden of underwriting their users. Onlayer enables ISVs to automate and complete merchant onboarding within minutes, replacing slow manual reviews with instant, data-driven decisions. This allows the ISV to scale its user acquisition aggressively without needing to build a massive internal risk operations team.
